I don't like writing serious messages on my phone, but ... I had read about aphantasia before the New Yorker article and found it both believable and interesting. I exchanged a number of emails with Tom, who started an aphantasia group.
I think of myself as in the broad middle wrt mental imaging. So it's not a deeply personal thing. But I spent a fair about of time trying to understand how aphantasics think. (Interestingly, Matt Yglesia, says he is aphantasic. And he can certainly think.) My guess is that aphantasics struggle with 2D games, even as simple as TicTacToe. One of my favorite tests for LLMs is TicTacToe. They often struggle with *explaining* their strategy. They can build a JSON representation of the board but can't seem to visualize it the way we do. On the other hand, if you trained a neutral net on TicTacToe game images, it would probably do quite well. But it wouldn't be an LLM! More generally, I suspect that LLMs are aphantasic.
