See contrib/debian. I have not used the script for some time but
I hope that it still works (I do not recall changes that may break it).

Debian users should be able to use generic binary. So the question
is really if package buys you a lot compared to tarball. AFAICS:
- tarball installs in /usr/local, package in /usr. I do not think
this is essential difference
- package checks for dependencies and allows uninstall
- package gives you feeling of doing things in right way
BTW: I would prefer to have binary packages included in Linux
distributions (and prepared by people connected to given distribution).
