a tool to monitor the core i7 cpus is i7z
  http://code.google.com/p/i7z/
it worked for me on my last laptop, not yet installed on this one

for my machine I get
fauser@moby:~$ cat /proc/cpuinfo |grep "model name"|uniq
model name      : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2640M CPU @ 2.80GHz
so it runs at 2.8GHz not 3GHz,
