explain mailing list settings: anybody can subscribe to the
list. However, to limit spam initially posts require
approval. This can be done by list managers. IIRC currently
this is myself, Bill and Ralf. I suspect that sometimes
Google passes messages without approval (AFAIK they run a
spam filter on incoming messages), but most messages will
show only after approval. Manager can approve message by
replying to it. After "good" (non-spam) message manager
can change user settings so that all other messages appear
immediately -- I have changed Thomas settings so that all
future messages should appear immediately whithout need
for approval.
The cost of this is some delay before first message shows
up and some effort from managers (they get all messages
needing approval).
