Dear Bay Area Friend of Global Exchange, Governor Schwarzenegger denied Stanley Tookie Williams appeal for clemency today. Williams is scheduled to be executed at 12:01am Tuesday. People all over the state, including Rev. Jesse Jackson and singer Joan Baez, are mobilizing to San Quentin State Penitentiary where there will be a peaceful protest and vigil tonight. Now is the time to express your opposition to the death penalty as well as your outrage, sadness and disappointment at the very unjust decision that was rendered today. Williams, a cofounder of the Crips gang, was convicted of murder and robbery in 1981 and given the death penalty. He turned his life around while on death row and became one of the most prominent former gang members to say, "I was wrong." He wrote more than eight children¹s books over the last decade that warn against gangs and youth violence. He is a leading role model of transformation for young people of color all over the nation. There is no doubt that Stanley Tookie Williams¹ message will carry on. Global Exchange asks you to honor his life by coming together tonight to show Governor Schwarzenegger that his decision will not extinguish Williams¹ bright light, and that we stand in support of Williams¹ legacy of peace. What: Large peaceful protest at San Quentin When: 8pm Tonight, Dec 12 Where: East Gate of San Quentin Prison. Details: You can park on Francisco Blvd. E, but expect to walk 1 to 1.5 miles to get to the east gate. It will be dark, and there is uneven pavement. Please listen to security people and don't engage the opposition as it only encourages them. >From San Francisco: Take 101 North and exit at E. >Francisco Blvd. From Richmond/East Bay: Take 580 to the Richmond bridge and continue towards 101 North. Take the first exit after you cross the bridge - Francisco Blvd. For more information, see http://www.savetookie.org/ Thanks for all your hard work on behalf of peace and justice, Global Exchange _________________________________________________________ Global Exchange is an international human rights group that relies on its members--tens of thousands of people just like you--to work with us to create social, political and environmental justice.
