Well, first thing, do you need to use jikes? javac should be fine for most stuff, I think. Second, is JAVA_HOME set? It should point to the root of your java install, I believe (eg, for me its /opt/blackdown-jdk-1.4.2_rc1). Thirdly, fwiw, the relavant-looking portions of my CLASSPATH are /opt/blackdown-jdk-1.4.2_rc1/jre/lib/rt.jar:.: The contents of rt.jar appear to be the class files for just about everything on my system, java-wise.
