Hello all. I am new to the list and trying to get new to linux. For my first Linux install I've chosen a 1996 vintage Dell laptop with a 2GB HDD and 32 MB of RAM. It doesn't have a CDROM drive, but I have a PCMCIA network card for it. I found "Tiny Linux" on the web here: http://tiny.seul.org/en/ and even a German site where someone installed it on the same computer I am using, so I know it can be done.
Questions: 1) This is an old Linux- though it is called "tiny linux" it is in reality an old version of slackware based on the linux 2.2.6 kernel. Am I better off looking for a more modern distribution? 2) Is there a recent distribution out there that works OK in memory challenged computers and has drivers for things like PCMCIA lan cards? 3) I have heard there will be an "install party" sometime soon. Any date yet? No, wait, I'm not offering to be your date for a linux install party... I mean has there been a date decided upon yet? I have installed the kernel, base, and the networking packages, and I have set up my user account outside of /root. Next I want to get a GUI going (I think that's what I want to do- suggestions appreciated). I think at this point I need to get the networking going so I can connect to my lan and grab files from the net or from my other PCs running Win 2K. I don't yet know if the linux package has a driver for a PCMCIA network card- how would I be able to find out? Am I better off making it dual boot to a windows OS so I can use the networking (that seems like a waste of perfectly good HDD space to me)?
