You have this dilemma. An older Linux will be developed when machines were smaller and thus require less memory. On the other hand, software evolves and security issues will have been addressed, so your older software may get hacked. Historically, Debian has been a good install for small memory footprint. However, with 32mB of ram, you'll probably want to run mostly a text console. Still, it's a great place to start--I started on a i386 with 4mB ram back in the day exactly the same way.
