Perhaps you (as I) have run across a well-known rendering bug in Mozilla. It is tripped regularly by certain pages on Slashdot.
I am fairly familiar with this bug. Everyone seems to complain about it. It's bug 217527. They landed a patch for this bug on the trunk, but not the branch, because it caused a regression (bug 246382). That regression is not going to get fixed soon. The slashdot bug will NOT be fixed for Firefox 1.0, and even 1.1, as both of those will come off of the branch.
What happens is that the left column is originally rendered as just text. Gecko can figure out the width based on the text, but it has to resize that column based on pictures that load later, too. It doesn't reflow again to catch the new width of that left column.
You can work around it by manually reflowing the page (which this bookmarklet does) through any means possible. They often suggest CTRL+SCROLL to change the font size, but I just do a reload.
