thanks all for your help.  that's the file that i've been trying to configure to conserve those settings, and it seems to be working correctly.  however, one more question.  i still have to perform the

route add default gw <server address>

command every time, and, since the wireless router is not broadcasting, set the essid.......where do i modify to conserve those settings?
