What kind of wireless card? I got mine working with the out-of-the-box ubuntu install onto a dell 600m laptop.
try doing an 'iwlist wlan1 scanning' to see if your card is even working. (Will see scan results if it is.)
if it is working, copy and paste the contents of your /etc/network/interfaces (feel free to change the Key to X's)

Wireless is kind of a mess in Linux right now. Like, I'm pretty sure I
can't help you since the way Gentoo does it is properly completely
different then how Ubuntu does it.
