The meeting I attended earlier this year was much more free form and
focused on actually doing some thing with FOSS software.  ACM seems to
be more aimed at being a professional in programming/computer science.

I agree. There may be occasions where it would be beneficial to have a
joint meeting because the topic could be something about FOSS or
software development that interest both groups. Overall if you want we
could invite ACM to our meetings.
