--- Begin Message ---On LinuxCon Europe I found the talk about FS in Russia very interesting and worth logging. FS is said to be very big in education: * 4 forked distros (AltLinux, Rose, EduBuntu, Mandriva) - estimation: 35% of school computers use one of the above * government funds Linux HW drivers The national FOSS support centre receives up to 600 calls (don't remember the time unit, damn) ODF is a standard/format *accepted* by the government, but not obligatory. Proprietary SW may be used only when FS is not available. Russian National Software Platform *plan*: * OS should be GNU/Linux-based * whenever possible FS apps should be used; proprietary only when FS is not a viable solution * offers solution stacks * this is not a GNU/Linux distribution, but a spedification under which distros could fall and therefore be deemed as officially supported * upstream → quality asusrance & function checks → "official repository" of said platform - build system is centralised; uses OBS or similar * requirements to join the Russian National Software Platform: - compatible with all of the above - must have local competence centre - it helps if you are a member of the RASPO¹ (but it's not obligatory) Businesses are reported to be migrating to FS. Estimate GNU/Linux usage in Russia overall: * 400.000 PCs in schools * 100.000 PCs in government * 500.000 PCs in private hands Risks they see: * they are just starting and there's lots to be done [Hook: that's why we should help them!] * Microsoft has money and is not afraid to use it * ODF is not yet obligatory to be accepted by the government and education [1] Russian Open Source Association -- FSFE Legal Coordinator and Fellowship group Slovenia Coordinator www: http://fsfe.org █▉ || priv. www: http://matija.suklje.name e-mail: [email protected] █▉█▉█▉ || priv. e-mail: [email protected] xmpp: [email protected] ▉▉ || priv. xmpp: [email protected] sip: [email protected] || gsm: +386 40 690 890
