By leading through publicised example - making more information about how to make purchasing decisions with those things in mind available. If you wrote a guide to buying vacuum cleaners in the UK from an ethical-hacker perspective, I'd certainly be influenced by it. There will always be nerds who refuse to get involved in any kind of ethical discussions or skew them in bizarre ways because the kinds of minds that are good at abstraction systematic thinking are less good at abstract empathetic thinking.
