would it have been possable to actually replace these files manually and the PC therefore be "patched" so to speak?
I assume so, provided you're resourceful enough to circumvent any file-is-currently-in-use type errors. It'll probably not be noticed by a Windows Update type tool though, and be patched again in the future.
