Regarding security theater. In Israel many things are also regarded by 
civilians as security theater. Sometimes it is indeed 'just a show' and 
sometimes the guard checking bags at the mall stops the suicide bomber. (This 
actually happened more than once.)
Even when it is (partly) 'just a show', it intimidates terrorists, and prevents 
them from trying. Many terrorists decided to detonate themselves outside 
instead of trying their luck with the guard. In these cases, I also see no harm 
in letting people feel a bit more secure.
