The media coverage actually made it look like the Russian military machine is top notch to make the picture even scarier. In reality it's not the case. Their core is based on the technology from the late 80s and early 90s. They do have a few types of next gen weapons, but they are not really deployed throughout the military. They lack high tech recon and precision strike weapons that helped the US crush Iraqi forces. The fact that even with the numbers they had they couldn't really overtake the Georgian positions allowing them to retreat and then come right back into South Ossetia shows how their military is still in the past. Yes, the terrain is a factor, but it still shows that their army is a manpower oriented low tech army.They are a "paper tiger" (in terms of conventional military forces), which just happened to take on a "paper duck".
