You don't think the somewhat "threatening" or "menancing" tone, and use of the word "assassination" might have contributed to the level of response? Note that "terrorism" and "threatening behaviour" are generally judged in terms of the affect felt by the "threatened" (or "target") and NOT by the (claimed) incentive of the threatener...
