Yeah, but VSS allows line-item comparison of version history. Open up 2
versions of the same files and changes between them are color-coded based on
additional code, deleted code, modified code.

Also, search for changes across versions, search for files checked out to
particular user, "pinning" get latests to a particular version, etc, etc

Yeah, I've got a darn cheap alternative. WinZip.

Lets say I'm working on a project called Squid, and its in its own
directory, "squid", with all the subdirectories within it.
Every day I create a Zip file of the Squid directory, with the "recurse
subdirectories" option, and name the file something like "squid_28JULY00",
"squid_29JULY00" and so on.

This works great; I've been able to successfully roll back large chunks of
code to "the last time it worked" when something has gone nuts and its not
an obvious fix.
