Hi everyone,
I just want to reiterate that I did not intend for this to become a big
issue. I should have been more clear about why I was asking my question --
I really *wasn't* complaining... really!
I know what it's like to need more robust hardware, software and
bandwidth... one or more of the three. I also know what it's like to have
no control over things like upstream router or other Internet outages, but
still have people come screaming at me because they can't get their mail. I
run a hosting service; believe me, I know the issues and the stresses of
providing a service like this. Everyone's happy -- as long as things are
perfect. And the Internet CERTAINLY isn't perfect!
This list, and it's sister lists, are a godsend and great community. You
are all savvy, smart, and pleasant people to interact with. I am sure that
should the need for an "upgrade" reach a critical point, we'll be notified
and be able to take action as an online community, just as a community on
solid ground would do in a time of crisis. And I think we ALL know that the
lists, list maintenance, list administration, and list infrastructure are
FREE, at least to us folks who just use it every day, and the implications
that go with that.
I congratulate everyone who has worked hard to provide this service to us,
and thank them for making it as reliable as it is!!!
Marc

Well, nobody pays for this service right? What do you expect for nothing?
Its basically a good deal (except when we get multiple copies of the same
posts) so what if it takes 10 minutes or 6 hours? You want a faster
response, then email individuals directly. Personally, I have not noticed
much downtime on the list other than the other day. OC-12? Get real!! A
simple T1 should handle about 320,000 requests a day or about 800 posts per
day by the 400 subscribers. Bandwidth is NOT the issue here. Its a simple
case of less than optimal software or hardware. But you get what you pay for
right?
