| We have used Source Safe with CF Studio, and the main problem we have
| encountered is that in CF Studio, you can't distinguish between an
| un-SourceSaved file, and a file that someone has already checked out.
|
| On a shared web site, where everyone has access to the same files, if
| someone checks out a file, then it is easy for someone else on the project
| to open it, and make changes unintentionally. CF and SS do not tell you
| "This file has been checked out and is in use by X programmer on X
machine"
It sounds like you don't have it set up correctly. On ours, if you try to
open a checked out file, it says "This file is currently checked out." Then
it asks if you would like to try to open it anyway, or something. If you
say yes, you get another error. If you say no, then the studio opens the
file and shows you the contents, but won't let you make any changes at all
... you can't even type.

| However, if the file is checked in, it is read-only. So, our policy is to
| ONLY WORK ON FILES YOU ACTUALLY CHECK-OUT.
|
| Another solution is to have everyone run a local copy of the working web
| site on their own machine. Then there is no potential for confusion, and
| no chance of working on the same file at once. However, programers must
| remember to "get latest version" every morning before they start work, or
| else they might be developing against someone else's old code.
|
| This 2nd solution is not practical in our company, however, since we all
| work on the same web site, if we have a team project.
