Since we're all jumping in, I'd like to suggest a new language: Ruby. This
is a true OO language that is more popular in Japan than PHP. The guys who
wrote the book, The Pragmatic Programmer, describe it as the first language
they've been excited about in 10 years.
Obviously, Java is a safer bet, but Ruby is far more interesting.

Subject: RE: Your Next Language
Here's my thoughts fellow coders...
I have been programming CF for years. Recently I've been interested in
picking up a new SOMETHING (anything to interest me into bettering myself).
I LOVE coding. I also LOVE application design. I'm sure we all do or we
wouldn't be here right now :) . I'm starting to learn PHP. The main reason
is because it is supported on a FREE platform which I believe a lot of my
"potential" clients would be interested in. I'm setting up a Linux/mySQL
development/play server this weekend (wish me luck).
I personally believe that diversification is key. Just don't spread
yourself too thin.
BTW, all my apps now and will always be FUSEBOXED. The language doesn't
matter.
My $0.02,
Phil
