Somebody's going to yell to move this to FB-Community, but I hate to answer
there if I don't know you're subscribed. =:) So, I'll try to add some FB
tech to this email. =:)

I switched because I wanted more control over my sites and that meant a
dedicated server. I found I could get a Cobalt RaQ3 for $99 per month. Since
I don't own a Linux copy of CF Server (I tried to trade my Windows copy for
one but could find no takers) I had to pick a different language for my
sites. I played with both JSP and PHP before deciding on the latter.

I've only been doing PHP for a couple months, so I'm still faster at CF, but
I find that I like PHP better than CF. Part of it (I think) stems from my
hardcore programming background -- PHP feels more like a "real" language.
The other part is that it's easier to do non-standard stuff with PHP --
creating graphics or PDF files on the fly, or any other weird thing that you
might want to do.

Also, PHP will run just about everywhere, and CF can't say that. Oh, and PHP
is FREE. =:)

I don't know if PHP has the equivalent of application.cfm (like I said, I'm
new at it), but since FB people include the app_local/globals file anyway, a
PHP FB app is structured pretty much the same way as a CF FB app. Of course,
with XFB that might not hold true, but structuring things a little
differently would be a small price to pay for the added value that I get in
PHP.

 ..jj..
