Well, I've written and teach about them, but in all fairness, I wasn't the
one who came up with the idea: it was Stan Cox. Here's how Stan explained it
to me:

Me: So Stan, you keep mentioning "wireframes"
Stan: They rock the rockin house
Me: Yes, let me get back to the "rocking house-rocking horse" in a minute.
What are wireframes?
Stan: Your body has a skelteton under your skin. In your case, WAY under
your skin.
Me: Watch it, Stan...
Stan: A wireframe is like an application's skelteton. Each page in the
applicatory is respresntated by a wireframe page. And a wireframe page only
has two thingses on it: responsiblscit...resposcnbilt...what it's supposed
to do and places you can go to from it.
Me: Oh, I see. Where do you use wireframes?
Stan: You? I don't know where you use them. I use them when I'm talking with
big client who wants me to do a rockin-horse applicatus and I need to find
out exactly what they want.
Me: But Stan, you've been telling me, and I've been telling everybody
else--giving you credit, of course!--that prototypes are how you find out
what the client wants.
Stan: Yes, Mr. Smarty, but how do you even know where to start with a
prototype?
Me: Hmmm...I see your point. So wireframes sort of "feed" the prototype?
Stan: Do you have any peanut butter?
Me: No--is that part of wireframes?
Stan: No, I'm hungry. Anyway, go look at the wireframes at Lee Borkman's
site. Lee took all my good ideas and turned them into a product, only I
think it could be betterer if he used the blink tag and colored table
backgrounds with Cold Fuzian.
Me: That's www.bjork.net?
Stan: Yes.
Me: Stan, the phrases "rockin horse" and "rockin house" seem to be
permanently associated with your name. Why is that?
Stan: Because when I was six, my parents tooked me to see a campsite or
forest or lake i don't remember which but i do remember we rented a nice RV
and drove there. Then in the middle of the night, I woke up cause the RV was
rockin and I went to my parents and they wuz afaid and were hugging each
other and I said "what's wrong?" and Dad said "I guess we just have a
rocking house!" and I said "yes but why is it rocking" and he asked my
mother to explain and she said there was a rocking horse rocking the rocking
house.
Me: Ah! I understand completely.
Stan: You're sure you're giving me credit for my bestest ideas and not
stealing them like that Bill GAtes did?
Me: Perish the thought, Stan!! When people hear the term XFB or Fusedocs or
any of that, they think only one name: Stan Cox
Stan: I rock the rockin horse who rocks the rockin house.
Me: Rock on.
