A layout file is used to display the content generated ny the cf_bodycontent custom tag, or in fb3 the fbx_layout file is used to do conditional logic to choose what layout file to use. Say you have an application, On the top level display page you want to have certain graphics and navigation bar and such, well you have a sub level that you want to use different nav bars and graphics for. You put these in layout files and then you can call them with conditional logic, and output the request.bodycontent variable (the content generated in your main fusebox switch case) wherever you want it to be placed in the layout. I'm sorry that's not a very good description. Anyone else? Do we have a naming convention for layout files? If not, I suggest the prefix "lay".
