another question on this:
am I right in thinking that the use of virtual folders (e.g. in IIS) to map a folder
which is not a physical subfolder of a website to e.g. mysite.com/child would
similarly not allow for proper nesting?

Yes, John. The logical nesting is completely tie to the physical
nesting, although this will certainly be a hot topic for the
Standards-Committee-to-be.

But would either of the following allow settings to be

or
