Well I don't have the money to move that far and I have a friend that lives
in Sydney and he said it is just as bad there. Of course if I could Lee
Borkman would be number one on the list to look up. LOL, I've wonder if he
knows the spoon game. If it was NZ then I think I would want to live near
New Christ Church. If I spelled it right that is. Of course I've never
been there of course.

You know, here in NZ it's hard to find developers. Last year we employed
somebody from Germany. Now, we're just negotiating with somebody to move
here from the UK. There wasn't the same boom and bust here as elsewhere
so the market isn't swamped with unemployed developers. I would guess
Australia is similar. Have you considered moving? Sydney has nice
beaches ;-)

I've been looking for a full time position since my lay off 16 months
ago.
And yes it is bad out here. I'm about out of reserve cash and I even
had to
apply for unemployment which is about to run out the end of this month.
Even working for myself which helped in the beginning but with the
massive
dot com failures there seems to be 100+ for every job open. In the past
four months I've been to about fifty interviews and still I can get
hired.

I started to work on a very short-term assignment which is helping but
I've
got the point where I need something a lot longer just to get caught up.
The only upside is the company I'm working at can't believe I'm as fast
as I
am. It helps with the self confidence but not the pocket.

I got my current job through Monster a couple of years ago with direct
contact with the hiring company. At the same time I interviewed with
several companies, again as direct contact.

I do agree that there is a lot of crud to wade through first though and
it
has probably gotten worse since then.

My experience with Monster.com is that many (if not most) openings
posted
there are actually salted by recruiters just to get you into their
databases. It has been rare (for me) to find an actual opening on
monster.com
