Title: Message
I thought all this talk of members and official members was long gone...

i was trying to think of a 'real' life analogy similar to what the guys are trying to do with Fusebox - us Brit's like our traditional British pubs so i thought i'd treat you lot - here's what i came up with the following:

Imagine the UK chain of pubs called JDWetherspoon, they have 530 pubs across the whole of the UK, their stock is doing well and business is flourishing reporting a 31% increase in sales (damn us Brits can drink!). Any Joe Bloggs can go into the pubs and freely use the pub, as you would expect.

Now, if i own stock in JDWetherspoon, things are a little different. I get invited to launch parties at new openings and also receive money off vouchers for meals etc when i visit the pubs. Aside from these small 'perks' I get to vote at the company's AGM on matters that get raised, re-election of directors, account audits etc. Their share price is currently 359p (5 bucks for the US lot, 10 dollars for you lot in Oz), whether i own 1 single share or 10,000 shares - i'm still a share holder and i still get offerred the same perks and i still get to vote at the AGM.

Granted, Fusebox is not a corporation and there's no stock involved and no return on investment but i think it was the right decision. Exactly as in the above example, anyone can still use Fusebox. It's those that want to invest (ie. donate) in Fusebox now have the ability to vote in elections and benefit from the 'perks' that their payment offers - such as prerelease versions of core files, who know's whatelse will be added to the list - that's for the steering comittee to decide. Joe Bloggs doesn't care about that the 'Earnings per share'  is up 20% or the 'Dividend per share' went up 10% - all they want to do is use the pub, similarly with Fusebox, if you don't donate - you can still make use of Fusebox, download current versions etc. If you want to be a part of Fusebox and exercise votings rights, and other perks then you need to donate and become an official member....anyhow, I see my 'donation' more of an 'investment', investing in the future of Fusebox and ensuring that it will be around when i need it.....

thanks for listening to the rants of a mad brit,

john.
ps. let's carry this on over on the community list if anyone feels that need to reply.

I a regular member. But to vote you have to be a Official member? You are forcing people to pay to become a member of an organized method and these are the only members that can vote the people who pay?

Subject: The Polls are Open

The nominations are in for the official Fusebox steering committee, and the
polls are now open.  Please set aside some time, and put some thought into your
voting. The Fusebox steering committee will be in charge of the official Fusebox
specification. Any change requests to the specification will go through this
committee.

Here's how the voting works:

- Only members can vote, you can sign up to be a member at
http://www.fusebox.org.
- There are 13 spots on the steering committee up for grabs
- Each voter votes for 13 people, ranking their top choice number 1, and their
bottom choice number 13
- You can only vote once, so spend some time reviewing the nominees before you
vote.
- Voting will be open all week.  The polls will close next monday, votes will be
tallied, and results released.
- The 13 seats will be offered to the 13 nominees with the highest cumulative
votes.  That means 13 bottom choice votes (ie 13) are worth the same as a single
top choice vote (ie 1).
- If an elected person declines the seat on the committee, the next runner up
will be offered the spot.  This will continue until all 13 seats are filled.

Good luck to the nominees, and let the voting begin!  Go to
http://www.fusebox.org log in as an official fusebox member, and follow the
links on the home page.
