OK, now this is *wierd*. I saved the source in notepad and open it up in DWMX. I get a full screen of garbage characters. I open it up in HS+, and I get normal HTML code except the characters in two places, one before the html starts and one within the text, both instances corresponding to cfmodule calls. In Notepad the first instance shows up as a line break only (no selectable chars) and the second shows up as a default square box. So it must be some kind of document encoding thing yeah? If I cfinclude the files instead of using cfmodule, nothing unusual happens. It's happening on two different servers (different OS even). I'm stumped. I'm suppressing layout on the cfmodule calls.
