Dan, JC:

I can't answer for JC, but I have edited DEF files directly when I
needed to make mass changes quickly -- e.g. deleting a bunch of
resources, or changing the path used by them en masse, creating a bunch
of rules that are all variations on a theme. Sometimes this can be done
more efficiently using a text editor than via the UI. You do need to be
careful, and make sure you know what you're doing.

JC, here's the trick you need if you do decide you want to make changes
externally:
1. Make a backup of your DEF and PDF just to be safe.
2. Make changes to DEF file and save.
3. Open the template PDF
4. Choose FusionPro > Data Definition > Wizard > Import a data source
from another document
5. Select the edited DEF file in the next dialog and click OK.

This will import the DEF into your PDF file. Be sure to check your
rules, field definitions, resource definitions, etc. just to make sure
that you didn't break anything when you edited the DEF file.

My question is, why edit the DEF file? You should be able to make any
changes to Formatted Text Resources in the Text Editor, or use
JavaScript rules to output whatever tags you want. What exactly are you
trying to accomplish?

Dan
