Well, you can certainly export the DEF file, edit it, and re-import it. I can't say I've never done that myself. But I'll echo Andy's caveat that you do have to be careful and know what you're doing, and I'll go even further by saying that this technique is not supported by Printable. And there are a couple of specific potential problems with maintaining your job this way: One, you might not be able to go back and modify the rule in the Text Editor, at least not without unintentionally changing something back when you save it. Two, you might end up with more complicated searches and replacements that won't be so quick as more business requirements come in.

So, if you're doing this all the time, you might be able to make the job more maintainable by abstracting this variable tagging with a JavaScript rule. For instance, instead of modifying the formatting tags in the DEF file, you could have a rule that returns the appropriate tags for each bit of text that you're making into a resource. You can use the "View Source" button to get the tags for a text resource, and use that as a basis for a rule to return whatever tags you need. Then you only have to modify that rule within the context of the Acrobat plug-in, instead of having to go to an external text editor. Such an approach is more flexible and extensible as well. For instance, you can vary the formatting tags on a record-by- record basis.
