We have had problems with "East European" fonts. The name refers to a larger set of characters that includes glyphs necessary for Slavic and other languages.

It must be hard-coded into the software. I remember when InDesign launched, Adobe touted its advanced typesetting features - things the program just did automatically - without the user having to do so much tweaking. If this is the case, then I don't expect any other programs to be able to do the same. Also, as mentioned, the font itself has a lot to do with it. Maybe it has kerning pairs that are built (like Dan said) to look good when normal tracking is applied. Do you have another version of Futura Condensed you can use? (Are you using Futura from Adobe's font library?) If you have a font editing program such as FontLab TransType, try opening the font and converting it to OpenType or TrueType and see if that helps. Also, try using another font just to prove that it IS in fact the font. Futura Condensed is not an obscure font, so I can't see why the customer wouldn't be against changing it if necessary.
