When starting a job, more often than not I do not have the original layout
files to export from, so I am starting with a pdf to build my template on
top of.

What I usually do is leave all of the placeholder information on the pdf
that will be replaced by variable and build on top of it in a different
color. When I have everything positioned how I want I delete the underlying
info. Recently however (possibly since upgrading to 5) when I turn on the
preview, what renders is not the same as what should be under the text box.
Sometimes it is a slight offset of what should be there, sometimes it is a
whole other piece of the background pdf showing through.

So, the job I am working on now for example, I have an area for name and
title on a business card. I place a text box directly on top of them and add
the appropriate variable data and check Œpreview¹ I should get my variable
info roughly right on top of the existing placeholder info. What I get
instead is the variable info in the correct position, but the static
background name up and to the right nearly out of the box completely and the
title almost up to the baseline of the name and over to the right. When I
output the file everything looks fine.

This is a screengrab with preview turned on:

This shows the above file when output:

Needless to say, this makes it impossible to try to line up variable on top
of a layout.

The pdf I am working on has all of its media boxes set to zero.

Any suggestions?
