Wow, 650 fields? That's a lot. How many records? The Preview Selector is trying to load all that data into memory. So yes, more RAM, and possibly more free hard drive space for virtual memory, might help. But, the real problem is that it's just a lot of data, and memory always has its limits.
What I would do is break up your main input file so that it just has a few records, and possibly trim down the number of fields as well, for purposes of Previewing the template in Desktop. Then, once you have everything set up right design-wise, swap in your real data file for composition. (If you're not a FusionPro Server customer, you should consider it.) If you can trim out any fields that aren't needed for the job, it will probably speed up composition time as well. We've investigated ways to optimize this so that the Preview Selector doesn't have to load everything, but generally, sample input files are small enough that this isn't too much of an issue.
