Wendy, I'm in the exact same position you are. Every book I've looked at is just as you said, aimed towards web design and programming.
The one resource I came across yesterday is the local area technical college. They have programming classes for C++ and Javascripting. Our college is really cheap and I'm currently looking into having my employer pick up the bill. Hopefully someone can recommend some books as well, I've looked but found nothing so far.
