SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: Sustainable development both improves quality of life and retains continuity with physical conditions. To do both requires that social systems be equitable and physical systems circular. You can not have sustainable development if the rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer, so at least some sort of social justice is inherent in the overall objective. This could be made more explicit in a subroutine. Where we have scientific or social uncertainty, we adopt the "precautionary principle". Jay
