If I was God - woops sorry I just looked in the mirror.  If it is obvious ....?  Obviously it isn't.  Working on the premise that no one does anything to deliberately harm themselves, the reason "they" don't do it is because they do not have a compelling reason of positive good for themselves.  If you stand on a street corner with a $5 bill and offer to give that five dollars for a penny, an obvious gain, most will suspect that you are trying to cheat them in some way and refuse your obvious good. 
 
The Enlightenment which is the basis for our current system of democracy and capitalism came from a few philosophers who were able to successfully argue that the "divine rights of kings" should be superseded by the concept of individual "rights".  It is my sense that we need to successfully argue that a Basic Income provides more benefits to everyone than the "divine rights of capitalism".
