Great choice of reading and pleased I was able to play some small part.
Sorry for my remark that had a bit of an edge. Interestingly, my wife has
commented a time or three that I don't know how to talk to people! I'll
work on it.
McLuhan's work seems to be enjoying a bit of a revival. There is one book
which attempts to systematize his thought processes. It is: Marshall and
Eric McLuhan, _Laws of Media: The New Science_, UofT Press:Toronto, 1988.
The authors introduce the concept of the tetrad in which any phenomenon
(institution, invention) is subjected to four questions:
1) What does it enhance?
2) What does it retrieve?
3) What does it obsolesce?
4) What does it reverse into?
Try it out on the MAI.
I've signed up for a short course on McLuhan's thought being offered later
this month at UWO, to be taught be a woman whose doctoral dissertation
dealt with his work. The man's thought is a treasure trove of ideas.
Thanks for re-inspiring me!
