Borrowing from something former mayor of New York City Ed Koch
said during a water shortage ("If it's yellow let it mellow,
if it's brown flush it down"), my advice, based on prudent
ignorance is:
When in doubt, throw it out.
On the other hand, I use a computer where I work that does
not have anti-virus software, and is running Windows 95, and
I have download a fair amount of stuff,
but so far I haven't seemed to
have caught any viruses, in part because I've been
lucky, and, I believe, in even greater part, because
I stick to places that, *prima facie*, look like they
should be safe (a number of these places are listed on
my web site at

One can download enough text to keep oneself busy for a long time
from Project Gutenberg....
At home I use a real-time anti-virus product, but even
there I don't go poking my mouse into any dark places
(www.nervemag.com is pretty "interesting", but safe --
Dr. Joycelyn Elders even has a lovely essay there...)....
Surfing? Remember "The Last Wave"....
