Ed,

The really disturbing thing is that most people’s wealth is the house they live in, and much of that is increasing land-value, that volatile collectible that could easily become a memory next week, or next month, or next  . . . .?

Ray,

This is a property owning republic with practically everyone owning capital. If anyone is too lazy, or too dumb to earn a living, charity can provide a comfortable living for them.

I’m surprised you don’t know that.

Harry should tell us how much of the capital is owned by how much of the population.

I don't want to horn in on Harry, but I've been reading something that seems relevant.  To summarize:

In "Wealth and Democracy", Kevin Phillips is said to report that the net worth, including home equity, of the middle quintile (fifth) of Americans declined by 10% between 1983 and 1995, rose again in 1998 and 1999, but then slipped right back down in 2000 and 2001.  The top one percent, over a million people, saw their net worth grow by 75%.  According to the Federal Reserve Bulletin, between 1983 and 1997 only the top five percent saw an increase in their net worth, while wealth declined for every one else.  Eighty percent of America's wealth - land, stocks, bonds - is in the hands of 10% of the people.  (Source: Molly Ivans and Lou Dubose, Bushwhacked, Random House, 2003, pp.43-44)

Note that I'm not vouching for the accuracy of the foregoing, just reporting it.
