Although I have been the loudest on this
list in suggesting repeatedly that Bush's mental faculties are not what would
be desirable in an American President, I think he’ll have worked this out a
long time ago -- or at least Negroponte and Zoellick will have told him
plainly. I think he badly wants to dig himself out of the political pit
he's in now but neither he nor anybody else knows how he can do this without
losing face.
Keith,
there is broadly supportive coverage here of the British people, as well as the
government’s experience and capability handling the 7/7 attacks. I saw one
headline that questioned the danger of our biggest ally’s Muslim population, and
CNN noted in its ‘trailers’ that authorities in the UK estimate about 10,000
Muslims in Britain support Al Qaeda. Watching
Blair’s remarks now. He is speaking more forcefully, as you observed, still
articulate under stress. Not defensive like Bush, even when struggling for
words, and that’s because he’s more comfortable with himself. I think Blair,
under fire, is validating his reelection. Bush’s
miracle may be arriving today in the form of a Rehnquist retirement. Nothing
like a monumental fight to rejuvenate things. Would knock off the headlines
less friendly to Bush. There’s a
nasty rumor (that I hope is simply hysterical speculation) that Justice Stevens
will also retire, but we’re about to experience a political hurricane here
regardless, winds from Dennis blowing north ominously. Karen Keith Hudson, Bath, England, <www.evolutionary-economics.org> |
