Lawry,

Thanks for the thoughtful words. I often worry that my anti-US warring mindset
posts will possibly be presumed to include the countless kind and genuinely
aware individuals I know comprises the rest of America. That is never my
intent. I have always loved Americans who I remember possess both compassion
and integrity.

I may have mentioned that Darryl and I were in New York City just after the
Canadian rescue of captured Americans in Iran. One restaurant, in learning were
Canadian, gave us our breakfast for free. At one of the shops on Madison, a
couple gave us great clothing, both because Darryl and I were actors and
Canadian. I lived in New York back in '75 and loved it and the majority of
people I met. People in New York responded favorably to Canadians because on
the whole I think we are good listeners, and they love to talk. I had visited
twice before, and also travelled twice to New Orleans, loving that area and its
people as well. In both places I experienced both sides of the social divide,
and enjoyed both. My identification with New Yorkers and New Orlineans is
therefore quite strong.

I hope America gets back on its feet, for its own sake and for that of the rest
of the world. I hope complacency and misguided priorities can be brought to
light once and for all. Grief often clears way for new vision like anger
cannot. I believe we're all destined for enlightenment, but must endure
countless lessons before arriving there. We fervently wish that it will be in
our time.

| Natalia,
|
| Please know that at least this American has a deep respect for Canada. Your
| help on getting US citizens out of Iran, your general quiet thoughtfulness,
| your participation in peace-keeping activities, the contributions of
| individual Canadians to US life (e.g. Jennings) -- these are all things that
| stand-out and appreciate.
|
| Thank you.

| Malcolm,
|
| Far from amicable. The US has, since Canada declined participation in the
| Iraq invasion, painted us with a very nasty colour. We weren't even
| acknowledged by Bush for our immediate assistance following 9/11. And the
| drug issue is a laugh because the US is by far the largest of crops to come
| across the border at Canada. I think its because Canadian crops are stepping
| on illegal markets in the US that finance illegal wars, but that's just a
| deduction, not necessarily truth, nor should it be considered as
| representative of this list.....
|
| To take a page from the US defensive posturing, "Why do they hate us so
| much?"
|
| We have always felt that if the US really wanted anything, anywhere, they
| will simply take it. E.g.: oil in Afghanistan/Iraq. We have huge resources
| they will need soon, and these tactics of citing Canada as a playground for
| terrorists and drug dealers help to sway Jo US public, even some Canadians,
| into thinking they will have the right to take over our security for the
| sake of their own--which means they will take over whatever else they don't
| yet have rights to--such as most of our water and land. Yet, as you had
| cause to mention that the US lost to our side before, well, Canada is still
| very big, and given that the US is stretched so thin militarily and
| financially, I doubt they will have the resources to try anything soon.
| Hopefully, some new technology will save their grim situation, and they'll
| focus on ingenuity rather than theft.

| | Let me get this straight: Yanks are patrolling "recreational areas"
| | which I assume cover the border area with Canada, with the intention of
| | the armed accosting of Canadian citizens who may have wandered over a
| | border (which I believe is largely unmarked in these sorts of areas,
| | certainly wasn't 20 or more years back when I was visiting BC)!!!!!
| |
| | OK, the Canadian irregulars and a handful of British regulars kicked the
| | shit out of the Yanks nearly 200 years back, but I thought things had by
| | and large been pretty amicable since then.
