I'd be very surprised if there isn't some sort of line of communication open to the leadership of AQ, however convoluted. That is what I pay (figuratively) our intelligence services to do!! Big scandal here in the UK that the intelligence services were in contact with the leadership of the IRA and Provisionals "how can one talk with terrorists" blah blah blah. My response was the same there - Grow up! I should bloody well hope that someone from MI5 or MI6 was trying to talk to them, that's what one of their jobs IS!!
