Chris, I’m not
going to get into an argument with you about who was more violent, that would
be an ongoing headache, but let’s not forget that the native Picts were regularly
invaded by the roaming Vikings. There is almost always a chain. So much of world
history is traced to war that originated not just for blood lust, but land,
resources and property. In modern civilized life we would like to think we have
evolved beyond that, but often do not. It’s the
cultural aspects that remain most troubling. Was this violence gender-specific?
Is most of it male to male assaults? If so, I think once again the need for
tribal rights of passage play a role here, especially for those not mentored in
what it means to be a mature man. Besides the
role of religion and Hollywood, I will gladly point my finger at sports
obsessions, soccer and football, especially. That surely is a carryover from
tribal warfare, inflaming testosterone and group madness. Wish I knew
more about why Finland has such a high murder rate. Can that be correct? Have a
