Don't know how Sachs could have been SO naive, Chris. It's very difficult
to figure Russia out, even for a brainy guy like Sachs. It's had episodes
of chaos. I doubt that anyone could figure out what was going on at times.
Even you might have trouble doing so.
Ed
Very well described, Lawry. Now Ed will have a hard time explaining how
Sachs was supposed to be SO naive as not to have seen it coming.
Of course, at another level, we have to recognize that Sachs was only a
consultant. He wasn't holding a gun to anyone's head. But in my opinion,
consultants have a special responsibility: it is to care for one's
clients.
We may only be providing recommendations and analyses, but we bear a
moral
responsibility for both the content of the recommendations and the
efficacy
with which they are implemented.
But Sachs DID practice responsibility to his clients = the oligarchs who
were waiting to reap the astronomical gains from the sell-out of Russia.
Cheers,
Chris
