Karen,
Until we get
the full report rather than commentary on it we cannot gauge its
relevance.
However, a
back of the envelope calculation indicates that to achieve the estimated 601,000
deaths would have meant that about 503,000 deaths have occurred in the couple of
years since the first estimate (by the same people).
To achieve
this would have meant an average daily death toll of about 800
civilians.
Even in the
present carnage, do the reported deaths indicate such a massive number
of civilian deaths per day?
I don't
think so.
The 601,000
is nonsense.
The Iraqi
Body Count people have defended themselves against the vicious attacks made
necessary by the need to get people to accept these bloated figures. You can
find much useful information at:
Something I discovered there amused me.
You may
recall that the actual number of excess civilian deaths in the war period was
21.
These were
found in 15 neighborhoods, so only 1 or so deaths were found in each
neighborhood - to be magnified into 98,000.
The report
pointed out that "many" of these might be combatants. I found out that 7 of
these 21 were criminal murders.
So, the
survey found 14 excess bodies ("many" of whom might be combatants) to build
their case for 98,000 deaths.
Of course,
this 98,000 becomes many more, perhaps 200,000, or 300,000 as it travels around
the Internet.
So, you see
why I call this "Slaughter of Armageddon proportions"
nonsense.
