Pete: The average Midterm turnout is in the mid30s. See more at National Voter Turnout in Federal Elections: 1960 – 2004 http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0781453.html.  The turnout for 2006 was. 40%, higher than last midterms’ 37.0%

“Voter Turnout was more than 40% this year, slightly higher than in the last midterm election. A preliminary analysis showed turnout down in some states and up in others - notably up in Virginia, where it appeared a higher number voted than in any midterm in the state's history, said Curtis Gans, director of the nonpartisan Center for the Study of the American Electorate at American University.

It also was a big turnout success for Democrats. They drew more voters than Republicans for the first time in a midterm election since 1990, Gans said Wednesday. The 2006 turnout compares with 39.7% in the last midterm in 2002. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061108/ap_on_el_ge/eln_turnout

The Virginia Recount: Rumor has it that Allen will announce as soon as Thursday evening that he will not seek a recount, as long as the canvassing underway does not yield major surprises. He trails Webb by 7,000 votes and that difference cannot, will not be made up in a recount. Some GOPers are urging him not to be the 2006 Gore, an insult within the GOP. Additionally, Allen had privately expressed boredom with being a Senator, wanted to run for Prez in 2008, so his motivation to win this seat is questionable. May explain his gaffes, as well, eh?

See DEMS win control of both Houses of Congress http://www.latimes.com/la-na-senate9nov09,0,7808688.story?track=mostviewed-homepage

DEMS picked up 6 new governorships and did not lose any of their incumbents. DEMs overturned GOP control of state legislatures and now control both chambers in 21 states (including Oregon) while Republicans control 15 and 9 are split between the two parties.  Moderation prevails for the moment.

Numbers I have posted: 32K DEMs voted, 24K Republicans.

60% of Independents voted for the DEMS, and 30% of evangelicals did.

Black voters voted overwhelmingly for DEMs. I haven’t checked on the Latino vote or the military vote yet.

Every GOP House seat that had corruption/scandal issues switched to DEM.

Four of 5 Fighting DEM Iraq war vets running for House seats won. The only one to lose was Tammy Duckworth, the paraplegic. The fully ambulatory males won.
