One of my cousins has Type 1 and now in his 40s, has eye and feet problems,
finally had to quit working and take disability. My aunt complains that
medical community is mostly about the drugs, less about finding a cure.

However, there is good from watching a program that promotes a healthier
lifestyle, with role models, outside the context of doctor's offices. My
preference would be that a portion of profits from sales go to research for
a cure. Perhaps some do that.

But there is another factor that has to change, as well, mentioned only
briefly in this article:

"What makes diabetes suited for this unusual brand of commercialization is a
combination of overwhelming numbers and a culture that values indulgence and
success, observers say.

The number of diabetics in the U.S., believed to be about 21 million,
exceeds the population of most states. The number is expected to rise to
48.3 million by 2050, according to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention."
