Keith,

the curve now dipping over into an exponential decline

If this continues...the present world population of over 7 billion will reach almost 10 billion as we approach 2100

If you think this slowing growth rate and resultant number is good news while admitting
we're already vastly over-populated

I didn't say it was good news. I was merely remaki9ng on what appears to be a self-correcting trend.

perhaps you will explain! Overshoot means that we are consuming 'stocks' of natural wealth (well in excess of 'flows' which decline daily)

see:

I agree that we are overshooting a great many resources.

Then you write:
But what about the further future? If, for example, world population reduces sufficiently in the next few decades so that everybody can have the same standard of living as the average person in the West, what will be the world population then? Will it have stabilized, or will it still be declining?

It will be growing from 7B to 9, 10..B Where does "declining" come from? War, Plague, famine...? Or do you refer to the rate of growth declining?

Rate of growth declining. There'll be plenty of famine, plagues and wars in the meantime also. The wars will probably be over water more than any other single factor. Distinct mumbles are already arising in India and south-east Asia about China's dam building -- caputirng water for its own irrigation systems.
