All I can see on the net are cyber crime stories, no do-good, after the criminal corporate player types. Small to medium sized businesses are currently most popular targets. It would appear that some of the most successful hackers are FBI backed, but typically going after organized crime or lesser criminals, mostly involved in small scams and "carders." All very disappointing. China's alleged hacking of Microsoft is the most news worthy. What a waste of talent. I'm sure there's a hero out there somewhere, just waiting for a new weakness. Perhaps they're already succeeding, quietly, and we've yet to hear about it. I would imagine many compromised billionaires would want to keep things quiet.

Visiting the last link, many factors come into play as on-line theft allegedly diminishes, but it's not just about better on-line security. It could have to do with lower payouts per stolen card, large issue expiration dates soon coming to an end--such that we can expect another wave of organized crime theft. Origin of these stories, like Verizon, may prove to be misleading in that they're hoping to mislead wanna-be hackers.

Have you read Brunner's _Shockwave Rider_? A pre-cyber-punk classic,
also pre-internet but prefigures it. Corrupt establishment fails to
co-opt brilliant young guy with a natural talent for computer
networking. A good read, makes a good case for subverting an
unrestrained and unremittingly corrupt system.

The downside, of course, is that the Really Bad Guys might deploy such
a wizard hacker first and do all the wrong things -- what the
"cyber-warfare" hype is all about.
